What to Communicate Before an Employee’s First Day

by Leading Edge

Leading Action

Every hiring process has its own timeline. No matter how long you have from the time of the offer to the first day, make sure to communicate with your new hires!

Here are five ways to get the communication ball rolling with a new employee:

  1. Communicate the game plan — Within a few days of accepting your official offer, new hires should know what to expect in the time leading up to their first day. Send an email about what will happen up until the time they start. This can be a detailed overview, or short and sweet, just be sure they know who to contact with any questions that may arise.
  2. Provide the paperwork — If possible, send it over electronically. The goal is to make paperwork as seamless as possible so if there is anything you know is complicated, save it for the first week.
  3. Get them excited — A two minute phone call or short email from a board member or someone they will be working with will go a long way in making them feel like a part of the team.
  4. Provide arrival logistics — Make sure they have all the necessary information for their arrival (the whos, whats, wheres, and whens)
  5. Share the plan — At least a few days before the first day, let them know what they can expect. Provide a schedule for the day, lunch plans, and bios of the people they will be meeting.
