Prep Your Team for a New Employee's First Day

by Leading Edge

The arrival of new hires should not be a surprise to anyone in the organization, especially people with whom they will be working.

The way you keep your current team informed is just as important as how you communicate with a new staff member during the onboarding process.

Here are a few suggestions for communicating with your existing staff on a new employee’s first day of work:

  • Send an all-staff email introducing the new hire including his/her bio and possibly a headshot.
  • Communicate the new hire’s desk location (or geographic region for remote employees), email, and phone number—ask colleagues not to overwhelm them with work emails but encourage them to drop by to say hello or send a QUICK welcome email.
  • Set and send lunch invites (in person or virtual) to the group(s) of staff for the new hire’s first day or first few days.
  • Assign a buddy who is not the new hire’s direct manager and is at a comparable level of seniority.
